Valley Wood is a lovely homes in the popular suburb of Heeley, minutes away from the city centre and amenities of Meersbrook and Gleadless.
Valley Wood is sizeable and open; the lounges and corridors are spacious, and people can move around freely. You will see pockets of gardens on both the bottom floor and the top floor that have been lovingly planted by staff, residents and our volunteers. We also have a heated smoking shed, a summer house and a disabled toilet outside so people can enjoy it all year round. I like doors open so that people feel they have their freedom to walk round the home and into the garden areas.
The rooms are large, and everyone has their own toilets, the bathrooms are spacious, it’s all new and recently refurbished. There are communal lounge areas to both floors plus dining areas. This gives our residents places to interact and easily socialise. People can bring their own furniture, ornaments, photos, pictures - whatever they can fit into their rooms. We encourage all residents to personalise their own spaces and give them a homely feel.
We also have visiting professionals; a G.P visit weekly, the district nurses are available daily, chiropodist visits, dentist, optician and we have our own hairdresser.
Here at Valley Wood, we’re a friendly, positive and professional team, our residents come first in everything we do. The staff are knowledgeable regarding individual needs and preferences. We use a person-centred approach depending on the needs and wants of the individual. We enjoy getting to know the person and strive to find out what works best for them. The team complete regular training within all areas: specialist dementia, safeguarding, first aid along with many more. We place a high value on well trained staff. We also encourage relative involvement within their loved one’s care. We encourage relatives to visit as often as possible and to interact with us all.
We want the residents to feel safe and comfortable at Valley Wood - this is their home.
Our residents get up when they want to, go to bed when they want to. There are no restrictions, we encourage everyone to continue with their own routines and whatever works best for them. They can spend time in their room or interact and socialise with others, it’s their choice. We are all accommodating to the needs of the individual, even down to ensuring we have the food they enjoy or making sure we’re offering the activities they wish to take part in.
We have two activities workers plus volunteers at Valley Wood. We offer a wide range of activities weekly. We love an outing and have completed a bike ride, we have been on a barge, we have visited the seaside for fish and chips and an ice cream. We go into the countryside for picnics, a monthly tea dance, out to the pub for lunch, shopping trips to Meadowhall, museums and many other venues. We also have a packed itinerary within the home, for example movement to music weekly, regular visits from Heeley City farm animals, interactive tables. We love a party and will invite all the relatives to join us in celebrating a birthday or just listening to a singer and having a dance. You will often hear music playing around our home.
All our food is prepared fresh on site. Residents have a daily choice, and menus are provided. If they require an alternative meal the kitchen will accommodate this. We cater for all religious needs, dietary need or individual preferences. We are happy to cater for all, if you want to come and have a meal with your loved one just let us know.
